Explosives for terror

Letter to the editor;

“ATF Issues Alert Notice Regarding Thefts of Explosives along Mexican Border”

May I remind the world that genuine terrorists are not dependent on theft to procure explosives. Terrorists' sponsoring governments are all well able to provide explosives in hundred-ton lots. Terrorist dictatorships can ship it world-wide by commercial carrier.

The "romantic" Hollywood version depicts commandos stealing dynamite and carrying it on foot in knapsacks over the rugged mountains, thru blizzards, and across the burning deserts among rattlesnakes, to blow up a bridge, a microwave relay-tower or a power-line.

If real terrorists (say, Saudi Arabians) were to phone home for a train-load (of, say, TNT) their government sponsors could have it delivered in sealed railroad containers (in, say, downtown Phoenix) -- and if that is not close enough, they could use their disposable credit cards to rent trucks to haul it to the site of their planned atrocity.

It can't hurt to be on the lookout for some drug-addicted drifter trying to "lift" fifty pounds of dynamite from a construction site. But that must not take our mind away from the plain fact that real terrorists have governments backing them.
